BUFFALO BILL’S TRUE LEGACY

At the height of his popularity as a showman, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was arguably the recognizable person  in the world. His exploits as a buffalo hunter, guide, soldier and Medal of Honor recipient are well known.  His legacy has been preserved in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center located in the town he founded in northwest Wyoming.

Colonel Cody’s biggest (literally) and most lasting achievement is located 6 miles west of Cody, Wyoming.   The 325 foot tall dam spanning the Shoshone Valley was the tallest structure of its kind in the world when completed in  1910.  Buffalo Bill and his partners, along with the State of Wyoming,  helped to convince the federal government to irrigate the Big Horn Basin.

 The Shoshone Project resulted in the construction of the dam and creation of a 10 mile long reservoir behind.  Some thirty years later, Congress renamed the dam in Cody’s honor and today the Buffalo Bill Dam is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and named a National Civil Engineering Landmark.
